6.5 and Drydock III

During the development of LCARS 47 version 6.5, we've decided to prioritize Drydock, the feature that allows a user to select their own class of starship to be displayed throughout LCARS 47. The previous incarnation of Drydock was admittedly limited due to the time required to design and animate cutaway diagrams.

Well, that's changing in 6.5. Not only are we gonna release more ship class selections than ever, we're also thinking of including refits and variants further down the line. Moreover, Drydock III plugins will be even more detailed and even more animated.

Here are two I just finished. They're ready for handing over to Lee for Quality Controlling before being approved for use. It's the Nova class (and its Rhode Island variant below), one of several classes on our highly classified list of inclusions (don't worry, the Sovereign, Intrepid, Galaxy, Defiant and Prometheus are confirmed).

Things Getting Heavy with the New Database

A huge overhaul is underway with the Federation Database. The new module will consist of everything we can think of... That's a lot of stuff. It truely is a monumental but highly rewarding task.

The first image to the left is a very famous cartograph of the Alpha Quadrant, the home of the United Federation of Planets.

The image to the right is a database file containing information pertaining to the Akira class starship, one of my favorite classes. There will be a file on every single starship class ever seen in Star Trek, every shuttle type, every escape pod design. Needless to say, it's gonna be huge. We won't be adding fan made stuff though but we may add selected noncanon ships like the Valiant class as well as ships from certain games like Activision's Falcon class (Romulan). We'll also use commonly accepted noncanon names for ships with no official name (where no tech manual gives it a name), like the Venture class scout seen in Star Trek: Insurrection.

The third image is something Stefan and I both worked on. He wanted to add this image since it has a ton of details.

Now, onto the really cool part...

A new, bigger Federation musical database. I know that you've all Googled a particular tune you heard in Star Trek, from Vivaldi to Sousa (pictured, right). Why not have it all in one app—available whenever? This will also include timeless Trek-unique pieces such as the already included Inner Light (but improved score). Federation Anthem? You got it!

There's only one minor problem... all the music (and the recording) must be either in the public domain or fall under a Creative Commons license. It's a minor problem, but it's one we have to respect. Having said that, I've found a ton of public domain works and I, myself, play the piano... so you'll probably be hearing more of my hammering on the black and whites.

On a quick side note, yes this database will be big. So it will not come with the main installer, but as an addon installer (much like the ever delayed Drydock plugins).

Prometheus and Nebula Classes • Drydock Plugins

Another Drydock release for you guys. The majestic Nebula class and the almost sinister looking Prometheus.

The Defiant class should be released soon and work has started on the Excelsior, Miranda, and Oberth classes

Nova Class Drydock Plugin

Another Drydock Plugin for you guys. This time it's the Nova Class. Probably Starfleet's cutest class—and one of my favorites.

Drydock Delays

Hi guys. Sorry to announce a slight delay with the Drydock Plugins. Rest assured that the Sovereign Class MSDs will be released tomorrow, shortly followed by the Intrepid Class, Galaxy Class and so on.

As always, feel free to leave a comment below. In the mean time, peace, love, and prosper.

Upgraded StartApp

The old StartApp simply doesn't handle the requirements of LCARS 47 anymore. To display all the relevant data and still reserve space for future expansion, more space was needed.

There's now better support for the custom name and registry fields under "Starship Configuration", with an option to load the config files into your favorite plain text editor.

An "Ambience Configuration" panel has also been added so you can select from a number of ambient sounds to play to make your experience all the more realistic.

Version 5 gets an MSD Overhaul

In the next update for version 5 (5.3), the app will lose all of the Intrepid class diagrams ready to support the new MSD plugins feature which will be required to be installed after you update LCARS 47. Tactical ship icons like the one pictured, will also reflect whichever plugin is installed and since it's now handled externally, the ship diagrams are even more detailed.

Don't worry if you were a fan of the Intrepid class, it will be available for download as a plugin (see: full list).

The Champaign update has also been applied to version 5.3, so it's now even more your own.

Deflector Shield (with changeable ship class MSD)

As you know, I've been working on support for custom ship class plugins. That's going so well, it's opening doors (or airlocks) for better animations. This is the latest product of the feature; deflector shield status readout.

Of course, I've added red and blue alert display functions, so when you hit the alert button, the shield display will reflect the new status. The layout itself is based on the shot from Star Trek: Nemesis, with obvious artistic license (pictured: Sovereign Class Starship).

When version 6 is released, all ship classes will have this function, and if there is no ship class MSD plugin installed, you'll see an error message.

LCARS 6 Custom Text Fields • Archived: Dec 6, 2011

Over the course of development, I got a few requests from users asking if I could add a customized ship name to the apps. For the small "module" apps, this was no problem, since it only took an open, edit, publish and and email. But the problem with LCARS 5 (and 6) was the compilation (including quality checks) took about half an hour, so I decided not to include any reference to ship names. Well, I figured I could just include a text file and solve all those problems. I thought the text file was a better idea then an user input field, since the text will be loaded each time the app starts.

So there it is, there will be a text file in the install directory, that you can edit. There is however, a character limit, although, quite generous.

LCARS 6 seems to be developing a more user oriented theme. It's getting rather souped up...

Enjoy.

ShipName.txt
shipName=USS  Champagne

//       Experiment with spacing in between the "USS" and the name of
//       the starship. The above name has two spaces to better fill the
//       placeholder. If you were to use the name, "USS ENTERPRISE", you
//       would only need one.

//       Use the LCARS Champagne app to test the name. It will
//       automatically reload when you save this text file.

Edit:
I figured I'd make "USS Champagne" the default name, as a homage to the good old naval tradition. I forgot to mention that there's a registry number option too. There is no (and no plans for) a ship class option, due to the variables involved in rendering MSDs in various modes.
