Master Systems Display and Unique Starship Abilities

Here she is. The Galaxy class starship. This took an entire month of work. It's loaded with animation and interaction. We're also confirming that this is the finalized user interface for the Master Systems Display Engineering module. This module will probably become the centre point of your LCARS 47 experience because with the rollout of 6.5, this screen will update to reflect the current shipboard situation. 

What does all that mean? Well, you probably already know that 6.5 will support multiple monitors and even have networking features. Thanks to our new event management mechanic, Eventus, LCARS 47 will now communicate with all other instances of LCARS 47, even those running on separate networked computers. For you, this means that if you eject the warp core, the MSD will update, to show that the warp core is not present, the nacelles will show a powered down state, and all systems reliant on the warp core will go offline. The core eject feature is standard across all the ships we'll be including in Drydock, but some ships will have unique abilities. Here's a class specific list of the most prominent unique ability (these aren't the only unique abilities each class will, have, just the ones we're confirming now).

The Sovereign
Those of you with Sovereigns will have the ability to detach the main deflector which will mean that shield systems lose a bit of stability, you won't be able to go to warp, and certainly not be able to navigate an asteroid field.

The Intrepid
If the Intrepid is more your thing, then you can play with the nacelles. They move and unless they're in the upright and locked position, you ain't going anywhere at warp speed. 

The Galaxy
The Galaxy has of course a wonderfully dramatic ability to separate the saucer section completely. You guys don't need details as to what happens during separation, so I'll skip the info for this one.

The Nova
Being a small ship appearing as featured ship in only two feature length episodes, deciding what unique features the Nova has was tough. We're still thinking of things to add, so, ideas on a post card, people.

The Prometheus
MVAM, MVAM, MVAM... MVAM. Plus a megatonne of other tactical systems, not limited to a sassy EMH.

6.5 and Drydock III

During the development of LCARS 47 version 6.5, we've decided to prioritize Drydock, the feature that allows a user to select their own class of starship to be displayed throughout LCARS 47. The previous incarnation of Drydock was admittedly limited due to the time required to design and animate cutaway diagrams.

Well, that's changing in 6.5. Not only are we gonna release more ship class selections than ever, we're also thinking of including refits and variants further down the line. Moreover, Drydock III plugins will be even more detailed and even more animated. 

Here are two I just finished. They're ready for handing over to Lee for Quality Controlling before being approved for use. It's the Nova class (and its Rhode Island variant below), one of several classes on our highly classified list of inclusions (don't worry, the Sovereign, Intrepid, Galaxy, Defiant and Prometheus are confirmed).

Prometheus Class MSD Cutaway

If you're with us on Facebook, you've likely already seen the Prometheus class MSD cutaway. If you're not, then here it is. It's almost there; about 50% complete.

This MSD turned out to be harder to work out and draw up than anticipated since we've incorporated the Multi Vector Assault Mode view configuration—this is LCARS 47, baby. The landing pads are also animated (as are the landing pads of all the starships with landing capabilities).

There's a little bit of artistic license involved to make it all work correctly and to make sure it's technically plausible. Although these are still basic draft images, they represent the final outline and layout of the ship. The shuttlebay has been altered slightly to accommodate a Starfleet Runabout and I've added a few extra torpedo launchers for good measure.

Galaxy class MSD WiP

I finished the Sovereign class MSD this morning, so I'll get to work on the Galaxy class tonight. Although by 'finished', I mean I'll probably still be working on it... The LCARS layout behind it is just an example of how it might look in Prolixus.

New Cutaway MSDs (Drydock)

Nobody has really complained about the lack of cutaway MSDs in LCARS 47, but let's face it, it's a shame they're not included in Drydock. Well, when we release the next update, you'll have them. There will be a dedicated engineering section and a layout similar to the warp core monitor from yesterday's post. The image here isn't finished, but it's an example of what I'm talking about. I figure, if I can move my schedule around a bit, I can complete an MSD per day, and probably two small MSDs per day. Hopefully this won't impact the development time too much. The MSDs are animated, too.

Prolixus 6.2 Completed Modules

Hi guys. I thought I'd keep you updated with regards to the upcoming service packs for Prolixus and Vexillum. The Database module in Prolixus has been completely revamped and is nearing completion. After the release, successive data packs will be released and can be installed at your own leisure. These will simply install and be ready to go. For the sake of development continuity however, major updates will contain all released data packs, so you don't have to keep installing pack after pack.

On a related note, I've remastered the alert sirens from DS9, Generations and other shows. So this means that high quality alert sounds are all ready for the Drydock updates. This means that if you want a class specific alert siren to match your installed Drydock plugin, you'll need to download the updated plugin from the downloads page when it's released. Thankfully, the audio remastering didn't take as long as expected, so a big thanks to the makers of Audacity!

Drydock Alert Siren Update

A little update of what we're currently working on. I've been tinkering with sound captures from Deep Space Nine and filtering the Defiant's red alert klaxon. As you probably know, the alert klaxon will vary throughout LCARS 47, depending on which Drydock plugin you have installed. Have a click on the example below and see what you think, compared to the default Intrepid/Sovereign Class alert siren currently used in LCARS 47.

Drydock Plugin • Sovereign Class

Hi guys, sorry about the delay. The Sovereign Class Drydock Plugin is now ready for download. Those of you that want the Intrepid Class, Galaxy Class, and so on, rest assured, they will be released soon. The Intrepid Class will be released tomorrow all going to plan.

To download, click here (broken link removed), and scroll to the "Drydock" section. Install and you're done. The MSD will be displayed throughout Vexillum and Prolixus

Deflector Shield (with changeable ship class MSD)

As you know, I've been working on support for custom ship class plugins. That's going so well, it's opening doors (or airlocks) for better animations. This is the latest product of the feature; deflector shield status readout.

Of course, I've added red and blue alert display functions, so when you hit the alert button, the shield display will reflect the new status. The layout itself is based on the shot from Star Trek: Nemesis, with obvious artistic license (pictured: Sovereign Class Starship).

When version 6 is released, all ship classes will have this function, and if there is no ship class MSD plugin installed, you'll see an error message.






LCARS 47 Champaign Update • Archived: Dec 10, 2011

I've just finished the Champaign update for LCARS 47 (versions 5.2+).

It won't affect the LCARS apps themselves, until version 6 is finished, but you will see the changes in the StartApp, which now includes the ability to edit the config files.

On a semi related note, the ship class plugin project is coming along nicely. Once LCARS 6 is released, you will be able to download any of the ship class plugins (only 1 ship class will work at any given time).
